David Bowie - Kansas City (’04)
Tuesday, May 18th, 2004> This is a reprint of a long email I wrote a bunch of people regarding a visit I made to see my daughter and take her out on a date to see a concert. Though not at the first time I’ve taken her as a ’standby’ from me being unsuccessful in getting a date more near my own age (she was my 14-year-old for a Dave Mathews concert, and we sat WAYY up near the front and other fans around us helped take care of her, bringing her sodas and stuff…) Bianca has yet to murmur a peep of complaint to this being the circumstance of her dad’s oft-hard luck with dates and stuff. At Bowie, she was 19 for this one, I printed out the email telling folks in my circle how it all went and stuff, and it goes like this:
I saw David Bowie in Kansas City. The Starlight Theater is a “modern” (circa 1950) version of St. Louis’s Muny (circa 1920) and the stage is framed in brick and tasteful 2-story Shakespearean balconies flanking it. It also has an ambitious and permanent scaffolding atop the stage’s exterior that’s apparently used for occasional circus and/or acrobatic acts. This proud venue is primarily used these days for musical productions (i.e., Fiddler on the Roof) and live theater, much like our Muny. It’s outdoor spacious seating and cavernous stage space lends itself perfectly for concert events like this one.
